Why Social Media?

Why Social Media?

Question: Why Social Media?

Rhetorical question to which many marketers are looking for a simple, straight forward answer. In a nutshell: because you have no option, unless you want to be left behind. In the ‘old days’ people talked about the ‘media landscape’. In the fast changing world we live and work today they refer to the ‘digital space’ which literally is sitting in the clouds. Marketing media as we knew it will never be the same again and has turned every man, woman and child into a voice, with an opinion. Brand users now all have license to tell and, effectively, to sell! Today people have relationships with brands, they ‘engage’ as evangelists or brand critics. They buy, they pay and they say what they think.

A 2013 Socialnomics report shows 90% of consumers trust peers’ recommendations, using social media, and only 14%trust advertisements. Of the 500 million registered Twitter users more than half recommend products via tweets. The average Tweeter tweets 300+ times; the common complaint? 56% of brands that they tweet about, fais to respond. Social Media is the #1 internet activity. Can your brand afford to fall outside of this consideration set?

Twitter powerusers Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have more Twitter followers than the entire population of South Africa. LinkedIn receive two new member sign-ups per second (per day). Put in perspective: that’s equalu to the entire UCT student body in less than 4 days!

Another 2013 survey reports 93% of marketers use social media for business purposes. Case study: Ford Explorer’s launch on Facebook attracted more traffic than its concurrent advertisement on Superbowl slot

With Grade 1’s starting to learn basic skills on iPads ( and +50% of the world’s population under 30 years old, best companies gear themselves up to social media, otherwise they simply won’t exist in the mind of the consumer. Scary, but true!
